Ratite Implanting Information

Electronic ID, Inc. pre-packaged microchips come with patented anti-migration tips, are gas sterilized and have four bar codes to automate record keeping and minimize transcription error.

Birds can be implanted at one day of age in the pipping muscle. Have one person hold the bird while the other person extends the head. Hold head in the palm of the hand and implant with the free hand.

Recommended implant site:
Pipping muscle (the small muscle mass below left ear) If using pre-packaged microchips: open individual package and load needle assembly into blue implanter. If using bulk chips: place microchip and needle into sterilizing solution (Nolvasan) and load into syringe implanter.

Microchiped birds are eligible for registration with the American Ostrich Association.
